The Institut d’Education Médicale et de Prévention (IEMP), founded in 1993 by Dr Bruno Assouly, is launching an information and awareness campaign on the good use of screens.
This campaign aims at a culture of reasonable screen use and an education in self-regulation, values with which Trois Six Neuf Douze is fully in agreement! “Together, let’s stay in control!” is its slogan, because regulation is indeed everyone’s business: public authorities, childhood and health professionals, families, but also public or private companies in which digital uses have infiltrated a great many professional practices.
The first part of this campaign is a very rich website presenting objective, scientifically based information, advice, support for everyone who wishes to relay the information, and posters to download.
This site is a goldmine of information! There are figures and societal and historical data on screen use, but also information on excessive use. Do you know what “phubbing” is? This neologism, proposed in 2012 by academics in Sydney (Australia), describes the increasingly widespread tendency to never take your eyes off your mobile phone when in company, with friends or even at a meeting! But the site goes well beyond anecdote: it defines what can be considered problematic or excessive use, its causes, its consequences, and gives keys to identifying it in yourself or those around you, and to acting on this issue. Screens are considered in the family setting, at every age of life, and also in the workplace.
The Institut d’Education Médicale et de Prévention also has a particular interest in the effects of screens on eyesight, since it has also been in charge, since 2009, of the “Journées Nationales de la macula”, to inform people and detect AMD early. But as far as screens are concerned, to date no study allows us to conclude that blue light could endanger our eyesight, and the only proven risk is eye strain.
Finally, the site offers a news watch on the field of screen use, knowledge tests on the effects of screens, and Tim and Lila’s quizzes, which allow parents, according to their children’s age groups, to test their educational support around screens.
To build this campaign, the Institut d’Education Médicale et de Prévention brought together an observatory made up of experts in the field: ophthalmologists, addiction specialists, psychiatrists, neuroscience researchers…
A reference site that responds very quickly to news about screen use, and a campaign to pass on!
