Some of you may have been surprised to receive, over the past few weeks, notifications informing you that companies you had never heard of were collecting your personal data and wanted to comply with the new European regulation. So a few words of explanation. This regulation, called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), requires all companies that use your personal data to tell you so. But how can companies you have never been in contact with have had access to it? Quite simply because when a company that tells you it collects your personal data – notably by letting you know it uses “cookies” – promises not to sell your personal data to anyone, that does not mean it refrains from passing it on to one of its subsidiaries or to a partner company, so that this free, reciprocal service enriches each of them without the user ever being informed. The first benefit of the GDPR, which came into force on 25 May, will therefore have been to force these companies to come forward and alert you to this traffic!
