When the virtual enters art

Since April 2018, l’Atelier des lumières has opened its doors in the 11th arrondissement of the capital. It is one of the thirteen cultural sites in the culturespaces network, a pioneer in the use of digital tools.
Behind the rather ordinary façade of this former foundry lies a considerable surprise. You will find an “immersive monumental exhibition venue” devoted to great figures of art. At the moment, three Viennese artists are in the spotlight, notably Gustav Klimt.
Their works, projected from floor to ceiling on all the walls, immerse visitors in a spellbinding world. A unique 360° sensory experience. More than 140 laser projectors sweep a space of 1,500 m² and 10 metres high.
“The largest fixed multimedia installation in the world ” sums up the president of culturespaces, Bruno Monnier. Lying on the floor or walking along the walls, your body becomes an integral part of the projected exhibition and lets you blend into the different works of art. The whole visit is accompanied by classical music that blends in harmony with the projections of the various paintings.
Does digital technology deprive us of beauty and emotion in art?
In this context, the use of digital technology complements the visit and showcases the works in a new light, allowing a vision and a feeling different from a traditional visit. It lets young and old imagine the works on display differently, and be swept away into a fascinating aesthetic universe.
The culturespaces network offers other unusual visits: the Arena of Nîmes in 3D, the Roman Theatre of Orange in virtual reality and other playful approaches rich in sensory experience.
The exhibition at l’Atelier des lumières runs until 6 January at 38 rue Saint Maur 75011 Paris. To avoid queues, do not hesitate to book your tickets in advance.
Enjoy your visit.
