The “Film pour enfants” Association

The “Film pour enfants” association has a twofold aim: to offer all children, in an educational context, free access to auteur animated cinema, and to put in place a lasting economic model for quality short films that do not fit into conventional distribution channels.

The association starts from the observation that children have little choice over what they watch, while many short films, a genuine alternative to the standardisation of audiovisual offerings, remain little known; its catalogue of films focuses on humanism, ecology and poetry, and aims to become a tool for awareness-raising and artistic awakening.

In support of cultural democratisation, a free, ad-free web portal lets families watch 350 short films.
A second portal, available by paid subscription, allows educational and cultural institutions to use the films offline and ensures that the films’ rights holders are paid.

For September 2019, the association is developing, in partnership with the Ministry of National Education and Réseau Canopé, a platform for education about and through the moving image.
This new tool will address, in a spirit of cross-curricular working, the other areas of learning (the living world, history-geography, citizenship…), and, in a spirit of transmediality, the different modes of expression (literature, painting, music…).
Simple and intuitive, it will allow teachers to design, plan and above all personalise teaching sequences. A list of films with accompanying activities will be offered according to students’ school level, teaching objectives, the theme of the lesson, and the knowledge and skills targeted. Links to literary, pictorial or musical works and to other online educational platforms will provide variations or extensions for the class.

The Takorama 2021 children’s film festival is starting! It promotes the values of solidarity and respect for others by giving children and young people the chance to discover new stories and visual worlds and to have their say by voting for their favourite film. “Films allow children to develop a critical mind and to see moving images, beyond entertainment, as a means of communication,” says Christophe Defaye, vice-president of films pour enfants. The film catalogue is grouped into films suitable for children aged 3 and over, 6 and over, and for young people aged 12 and over and 15 and over. All the films are silent, using only music to shape the arc of the story. Primary and secondary school teachers can register their classes for free. Films pour enfants has released the classroom use rights for the 15 short films, accompanied by educational activities. Parents are also invited to register their children.
